Aston Villa has announced the signing of 23 -year England Under 21 international Matt Targett from Southampton for an initial fee of £11.5million rising to a potential £17million with add-ons.

The transfer means that Targett has ended his 15-year association with the South Coast Club having joined them at the age of just eight years old.

Matt Targett made a total of 21 appearances for Southampton last season and 63 in total since making his debut for the club in 2014.

He also had a loan spell with Fulham during the 2017/18 season.

Villa boss Dean Smith told the club’s website, www.avfc.co.uk:

We’re very pleased to have Matt join us. He’s a player we have been looking at for a considerable amount of time.

He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further.

He will help make us a stronger defensive unit and we are all looking forward to working with him.

Matt Target will compete with Neil Taylor for the left-back spot next season.

Targett is Dean Smith’s fifth summer signing to date, joining Wesley, Diego Jota, Anwar El Ghazi and Kortney Hause at Villa Park.
