Atletico Madrid winger Antoine Griezmann has elected to stay in the Spanish capital amid rumors linking him to Barcelona.
According to AS reporter, Jorge Garcia, the French winger will honor his recent contract extension that expires in 2022 and has been promised by the Atletico hierarchy that there will be summer signings.
Barcelona’s original plan was to activate Griezmann’s release clause of £87.5 million (€100 million) July 1. According to previous reports, Atelti asked for €200 million in exchange for the Frenchman. The Catalan club caught themselves in a bit of trouble once Atletico Madrid reported them to FIFA officials because of Barcelona’s constant inferring of the player. Atletico reported their Spanish counterparts for ‘inappropriate contact’ with Griezmann’s camp.
Antoine Griezmann’s form has not been too shabby as of late. The left winger scored two goals in the UEFA Europa League final, sealing the win against Marseille, qualifying his Spanish club for next year’s Champions League campaign. In addition to that, Griezmann will be in the limelight win they face rivals, Real Madrid, in the UEFA Super Cup Aug. 15.
Greizmann reportedly threatened to leave the Estadio Vicente Calderon if the club did not bolster their squad after another suffocating campaign in direct competition with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Although the three clubs swept European and domestic trophies, the French star is not satisfied with what has occurred in the past two seasons.
The Frenchman finished the season with 29 goals, 15 assists in 49 appearances. Griezmann will look to continue his goal-scoring form when he suits up for France in the FIFA World Cup. Les Bleus will face Austrailia in their first match of Group C June 16.
