One of the most sought after young talents in world football will be joining German giants Bayern Munich this summer, the Schalke Director Christian Heidel has confirmed.

“Leon Goretzka informed us at the beginning of this week that he wishes to leave the club to join Bayern Munich,” he said.

“We regret that. Yesterday Karl-Heinz Rummenigge informed us that Leon had his medical. We lose a very good player.

“He signed at Bayern a contract starting from 1. July 2018. We did everything to keep Leon at Schalke. Last summer there was no agreement with him and his agent. He wanted more time to see the sportical development.”

The 22-year old German international was free to negotiate with other clubs due to his contract running down and will sign a contract with Bayern this summer.

There were a number of other clubs chasing the midfielder with Liverpool reportedly making an approach. But it seems the player has a desire to stay in his home country for now and commit his future in Munich.

He has made over 100 appearances for the club he has been at since 2013, when he joined from Bochum for £3.5 million. Since then he has attracted plaudits from across the world and is set to become one of the biggest names on the world stage.
