German defender Benedikt Howedes a key Juventus target
According to reports in Italy, Germany’s versatile 29-year-old veteran defender Benedikt Howedes has emerged as a new defensive target for Italian Champions Juventus. Howedes has spent his entire professional playing career at Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga, but Juventus aim to break Howedes’s streak as a one-club player and give him the opportunity to experience the Italian Serie A.
In today’s modern world football, it is quite a rarity to find a player who spends their entire professional career representing only one club. However, Howedes’s future at Schalke 04 may be in jeopardy after Juventus have been on the prowl for defensive recruitments to replace the gaping hole left in the center of the defense by the departure of their star player Leonardo Bonucci.
Although Howedes primarily plays in the center of defense, he is able to play on both the right and left side of the defense as well. Howedes’s versatility is proving very attractive to Juventus and a big reason why their interest in the player is heating up.
The reports suggest Howedes is being offered by Juventus a three-year contract worth roughly €4 million a year.
Being an established German international and World Cup winner, Howedes would certainly be an asset if added to Juventus this summer. Whether Schalke and Howedes both agree to the move remains to be seen, but a transfer that must be watched in the coming days.
