Manchester United have officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Benfica for centre-back Victor Lindelof as both clubs agree on a reported transfer fee of £35M plus a further €5m based on Lindelof’s achievements.

Sky Sports News HQ revealed in May that Jose Mourinho was planning on signing a central defender this summer and had identified Lindelof, Michael Keane, and Virgil van Dijk as his three main targets. Now as Lindelof is joining Mourinho’s side, it is clear that no other center backs will be persuaded by Manchester United.

A statement on the Manchester Untied website read:

Manchester United is pleased to announce that it has reached agreement with Benfica for the transfer of Victor Lindelof, subject to a medical examination, international clearance and personal terms.

A further announcement will be made once the transfer is complete.

What type of player is Lindelof?

Built like a traditional centre-back and standing at 6ft 2in, Lindelof possesses the mobility and technical ability to play as a right-back, as he has done on several occasions at international level.

He also has an ability to read the game that is reminiscent of Rio Ferdinand, rarely conceding fouls and picking up very few yellow cards.

According to reports in Portugal, Mourinho continued to have his scouts watch Lindelof this season, and he is understood to be particularly impressed with his speed as well as his defensive capabilities, seeing similarities between the Swede and Raphael Varane, who he managed at Real Madrid.

Having started his career at Vasteras SK in the lower tiers of Swedish football, Lindelof signed for Benfica as a 17-year-old in December 2011. It took him almost two years in the reserves before he finally made his first-team debut in October 2013. His charming form also saw him break into the Sweden squad for Euro 2016. He has since gone on to win 11 caps, and scored his first goal against Bulgaria in a 3-0 win last month.

Former Fwedish player, also Reds Treble winner, Jesper Blomqvist believes United and the 22-year-old would be a perfect match .

I have seen him play for the national Under-21s the senior side and in the Champions League for Benfica and he has the right qualities.

He’s quick, confident with the ball, likes to play and is very strong. For United fans I think the best comparisons would be with Rio Ferdinand and Ronny Johnsen. I’m not saying he is at their level yet but he is very capable of getting there.

He’s a mature player and a mature person. One thing I do like about him is that he hasn’t gone an easy route with his career.”

That tells you everything you need to know about him. Obviously, a move to Manchester United is a different level again. Not every Swede is Zlatan Ibrahimovic! But you get the feeling that Victor would handle it okay.

Last November, Zlatan Ibrahimovic talked about Victor Lindelof and termed him as a great fit for Manchester United. He played alongside Victor Lindelof for Sweden before the former retired from international duty last year. And now it looks like Zlatan won’t play with him at Old Trafford either after the striker was released by the club this week.

I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing.

Is he good enough for United? I think he’s good enough for the big clubs out there. It’s up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him. I know he is hot on the market so let him make the right choice, what fits him good.

ZLATAN approves !!! You should have no doubt now.
