Liverpool look set to announce their next signing sooner rather than later, with Goal reporting they’re set to announce a pre-contract agreement with Schalke defender Joel Matip. The Cameroonian has been linked with The Reds for some time, and could now complete his move.
There was a period when it looked like the transfer wouldn’t come off, and Matip would sign a new deal with the Bundesliga club, but he now appears set to join Liverpool and be Jurgen Klopp’s first major summer signing.
The deal to bring Matip to England is thought to be a four-year contract, and will mark the German-born defender as perhaps the central part of a reformed Liverpool defence. The 24-year-old has been a part of Schalke’s senior team for almost seven years now, and will bring a wealth of experience to Anfield despite his age. The Cameroon international has also proven to be a threat going forward, scoring three league goals already this season.
Matip has turned out to be one of the strongest defenders in the Bundesliga, and is versatile enough to slot into midfield as well when needed. It is unlikely he’ll be the last big bit of business Liverpool do during this summer’s window, but he could certainly turn out to be the best value.
