Manchester United were outbid for Martial
Manchester United managed to secure the deadline day signing of French teenage sensation Anthony Martial for a record-breaking fee, but Louis Van Gaal’s side were not the highest bidders, according to the Manchester Evening News.
An unnamed club reported outbid the 13-time Premier League champions in the race to sign the highly-rated forward. However, Martial was desperate to move to Old Trafford and convinced former club Monaco to accept their offer instead.
It is still unknown who the other team was, but it was reported by the Daily Star that Jose Mourinho also expressed an interest in the 19-year-old and tried to hijack United’s move for Martial but failed in their attempts.
The Frenchman, who won his first senior international cap shortly after joining the Red Devils, has been the centre of media attention since his move to Manchester, with an explosive start to life in the Premier League leaving fans question whether or not he was the ‘signing of the summer’ – despite his extremely high price tag.
