Villa man Confirms Interest in Berbatov
Ex-Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has exclusively revealed to the Daily Express’ Peter Edwards that his old club are in talks with free agent Dimitar Berbatov over a possible move to Villa Park.
Manager Tim Sherwood has been faced with the task to replace star striker Christian Benteke in his first transfer window with the club, after the Belgian made a £32.5m to five-time European champions Liverpool, and Petrov admits ‘there were talks’ between the club and the former Manchester United and Tottenham forward but ‘I [Petrov] can’t reveal you anything at the moment’.
The 34-year-old scored 122 goals in his eight-year stint in the Premier League, with the two aforementioned clubs and now Championship outfit Fulham, before moving to wealthy Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. Since joining the French side, Bulgaria’s all-time top goalscorer has reiterated his desire to return to England on several occasions.
The 1982 European Cup winners are also understood to be in advanced talks with Tottenham frontman Emmanuel Adebayor, with the Togo international poised to have a medical in the Midlands in the coming days. The 2008 African Player of the Year could form a strike force with the 2010/11 Premier League Golden Boot co-winner in an attempt to keep Tim Sherwood’s side from facing a third consecutive battle against relegation.
